Diary and medals, 1915 and n.d.

The collection includes a 58-page manuscript diary (1915), with notes on Flood's service at Ypres. He writes about the carnage he witnesses ("this is not a war at all Murder I call it.") and describes his passionate hatred of Germany ("I only hope we are able to go through Berlin then we will slain every one.") He also pencils song and poem lyrics, mostly about Ireland; lists of domestic supplies and their cost; lists of letters received and sent and their postage; lists of injured, sick, or killed soldiers; and a short autobiography of his military service. A black-and-white photograph found in the diary may depict his home. The collection also includes two medals and a brass cap badge and ribbon. Acquired as part of the William B. Hamilton Collection of British Manuscripts. (01-061).
